I've been exercising on and off, mostly yoga, but never gotten noticeably stronger. I wanted that to change. So I started to go through various exercise routines on YouTube and fell in love working out with women athletes and body builders. Not that I'm aiming for that chiseled look these women have, but I do want strong muscles and some definition. This will also tighten the skin!

So here are two important things to know if you want to tighten, strengthen and build muscles effectively:

YOU NEED RESISTANCE & REST

How to Build Muscle Women 50 Plus
Resistance:
The most important thing is not that you workout longer, or do more repetitions. The most important thing if you want to gain muscle strength and muscle mass is that you create resistance and increase the resistance over time. This can be achieved with your own body weight, resistance bands, dumbbells, or machines. Once you easily complete at least 10 -12 rounds of a given exercise, you increase the resistance. Then do as many rounds as you can with the increased resistance. You might be able to do 4 to 6 repetitions. Then finish the set with the lower resistance. Work yourself up until you can complete 10 -12 rounds again. And of course, you need to keep the perfect form when doing the exercises. Never compromise form.

Rest:
Another important thing is rest. Your muscles actually grow during the resting period. You can either do full body workouts 3 times a week with a day of rest in between. Or you can do split workouts, and alternate between lower body and upper body. Find your own way and pace!

So if you want to tighten, strengthen and build muscles don't waste your time on the thread mill. You'll get your heart rate up plenty with resistance exercises.

Here are the ladies I've been virtually working out with on YouTube. Check them out and try some of their routines -there are plenty to choose from!
